What is the Main Difference between Mining and Quarrying?

What is the main difference between mining and quarrying? You must have heard the word mine and quarry. A quarry is a type of open-pit mine in which dimension stone, rock, construction aggregate, riprap, sand, gravel, or slate is excavated from the ground. The operation of quarries are regulated in some jurisdictions to reduce their environmental impacts.

Mining Definition

On the other hand, Mining is the extraction of valuable minerals or other geological materials from the Earth. This extraction is usually from an ore body, lode, vein, seam, reef or placer deposit. These deposits form a mineralized commodity that is of economic interest to the miner. Ores recovered by mining include metals, coal, oil shale, gemstones, limestone, chalk, dimension stone, rock salt, potash, gravel, and clay. Mining is required to obtain any material that cannot be grown through agricultural processes, or feasibly created artificially in a laboratory or factory. Mining in a wider sense includes extraction of any non-renewable resource such as petroleum, natural gas, or even water.

Process of Quarrying

Quarrying is the process of removing rock, sand, gravel or other minerals from the ground. Quarrying is done in order to use the material for construction or other uses. So, a quarry is any such working on the surface of the earth where minerals are extracted. Quarries are also known by other names around the world. Some names includes surface mine, pit, open pit or opencast mine. Within the UK, the largest quantity of mineral extracted by quarrying is used for construction and known as aggregates.

"What

What is the Difference between a Mine and a Quarry?

In the UK a mine is defined legally as an underground working and a quarry as a site of mineral extraction without a roof. In other parts of the world, the world, mining is used interchangeably with quarrying. The term quarrying is often associated with a place where natural stone is extracted to produce building stone or dimension stone. Thus, the name is thought to be derived from the latin ‘quadraria’ which described such a place. The term mining was similarly associated with places where minerals were extracted to produce metals or coal.

Quarrying Industry

The quarrying industry is a long established but unpredictable industry. It involves hazardous conditions for both plant and personnel. Frequently machinery operates under impact loading conditions with charges that vary in weight from only a few kilograms to several tons. Much of the machinery is of traditional design, which has evolved over the years. Such designs are not easily codified, nor their rationale documented, and successful performance relies upon step-by-step progress, and operating conditions within historic experience.

Equipment for Quarrying

Quarrying equipment is very heavy duty and is often thought of as low-tech. Process of quarrying is especially compared with industries like nuclear and aerospace, but the safety and operational reliability of the industry is still dependent on the same features as in these high-tech industries. In addition, practices which have developed over the years may not be the best available, and because of changes in materials and duty may even become inadequate.

Final Statement

To put it into nutshell, the operations of taking out the materials from the ground at great depths are known as mining, whereas in the case of the quarry, the operations for taking out the match as stone are carried out at ground level in an exposed condition. In other words, the process of taking out stones from the natural rock is known as quarrying stones thus obtained are used for various engineering purposes.
