Interior design is planning and design of man-made spaces, a part of environmental design and closely related to architecture.

 

Designing Interior Spaces

Although the desire to create a pleasant environment is as old as civilization itself, the field of interior design is relatively new. Since at least the middle of the 20th century, the term interior decorator has been so loosely applied as to be nearly meaningless, with the result that other, more descriptive terms have come into use.

The term interior design indicates a broader area of activity and at the same time suggests its status as a serious profession. In some European countries, where the profession is well established, it is known as interior architecture. Individuals who are concerned with the many elements that shape man-made environments have come to refer to the total field as environmental design.

 

Residential and Commercial Interior Space Design

Interior design includes two main areas, namely residential and commercial design. In the following, we will discuss both areas briefly.

 

Residential Design

Residential design is the design of the interior of private residences. As this type design is very specific for individual situations. The needs and wants of the individual are paramount in this area of interior design. The interior designer may work on the project from the initial planning stage or may work on the remodeling of an existing structure. It is often a very involved process that takes months to fine-tune and create a space with the vision of the client.

 

Commercial Design

Commercial design encompasses a wide range of subspecialties.

 

Retail

Retail includes malls and shopping centers, department stores, specialty stores, visual merchandising, and showrooms.

 

Visual and Spatial Branding

Visual and spatial branding refers to the use of space as a medium to express a corporate brand.

 

Corporate

Corporate refers to office design for any kind of business such as banks.

 

 

 

 

Healthcare

Healthcare indicates the design of hospitals, assisted living facilities, medical offices, dentist offices, psychiatric facilities, laboratories, medical specialist facilities.

 

Hospitality and Recreation

Hospitality and recreation includes hotels, motels, resorts, cruise ships, cafes, bars, casinos, nightclubs, theaters, music and concert halls, opera houses, sports venues, restaurants, gyms, health clubs and spas, etc.

 

Institutional

Institutional refers to government offices, financial institutions (banks and credit unions), schools and universities, religious facilities, etc.

 

Industrial Facilities

Industrial facilities indicates manufacturing and training facilities as well as import and export facilities.

 

Exhibition

Exhibition includes museums, gallery, exhibition hall, specially the design for showroom and exhibition gallery.

 

Traffic Building

Traffic Building includes bus station, subway station, airports, pier, etc.

 

Sports

Sports includes gyms, stadiums, swimming rooms, basketball halls, etc.
