Cutting Marble at Home

Cutting marble at home seems to be difficult. But, in small scale, this can be done. For large quantity, of course professional manufacturing is needed. But what if you need to cut a few number of slabs or tiles at home. This passage will help as a guideline to cut marble with few equipment at home. Stay with us if you are interested in this topic.

Applications of Marble

Marble can be used in numerous places such as bathroom shower walls, kitchen countertops and bookshelves, as well as stair treads and thresholds. Marble is one of many natural stones that make up slab material, and just like all other slabs, it needs to be cut to fit your specific installation. While large-scale cutting should be left to professionals with commercial slab equipment, the average do-it-yourselfer can cut smaller marble slabs for specific installation requirements.

Cutting Marble

Mark your cutting line on wide tape, direct a trickle of water onto the front of the blade and then make your cut. Remember to wear your gloves and eye and ear protection. Don’t worry. It’s not that hard. You can use an ordinary circular saw, equipped with a diamond blade, to wet-cut your marble. Because this will be a messy job and you’ll need your garden hose, you’ll want to work outdoors.

Precautions

Protect your marble slab by placing it on a 2-in. thick piece of rigid foam. Mark your cutting line with a marker on a wide piece of tape. Using a hand clamp to hold the hose in place, direct a trickle of water on the front of the diamond blade to cool it. Put on your eye protection and make your cut. You’ll be surprised how quickly the marble cuts using this low-tech method. The edge might be a bit rough, but you can smooth them using an orbital sander and slowly working your way from 40 to 400 grit sandpaper.

Five Steps to Cut Marble Yourself

In this part, we will end the text with a brief description of steps that are required for cutting marble at home. The steps are as follows:

Step 1

Measure the area where you will be making the cut. Protect the edge of the marble where you will be cutting the slab. Cover the area with a few layers of masking tape. Place your cutting marks on top of the masking tape, using the measuring tape.

Step 2

Move the slab to a cutting area outside. Prepare a flat work surface by placing a piece of plywood across two sawhorses. Alternatively, for smaller pieces such as a vanity countertop, you can cut on the grass as long as it is a level area.

Step 3

Set the depth of the saw according to the thickness of your marble slab. Move all of your saw-related equipment near the slab, such as the water source (if it has a separate reservoir and a hose attached, which most do) and hoses. Clamp the slab in place.

Step 4

Turn on the saw and cut through the marble along the mark on the tape. Hold the saw firmly with both hands and push the blade slowly along the cut until you are through the piece.

Step 5

Trim any curved edges or cutouts with an angle grinder and a dry-use stone blade. Hold the grinder with both hands, sink the blade into the slab and slowly pull the blade around the area where you need to widen the cutout. Move the blade to contour to the line.
