Polished Surface Finish

Polished surface finish is smooth, shiny, and glossy. It creates a high end and luxurious feel. Polishing natural stone actually creates a barrier that helps protect the stone from stains. On the other end, polished stone is prone to scratches and scratches are more visible due to the reflective property of the finish. The surface finish you choose will affect the look and feel of your room and the maintenance of your stone.

Polishing and Buffing

Polishing and buffing are finishing processes for smoothing a workpiece’s surface using an abrasive and a work wheel or a leather strop. Technically polishing refers to processes that use an abrasive that is glued to the work wheel, while buffing uses a loose abrasive applied to the work wheel. Polishing is a more aggressive process while buffing is less harsh, which leads to a smoother, brighter finish. A common misconception is that a polished surface has a mirror bright finish, however most mirror bright finishes are actually buffed.

Polished Surface Finished

A polished finish has a highly reflective surface, which will display the vibrancy of the stone’s colors as well as the character of the stone. The texture is very smooth and is not very porous. The full color, depth, and crystal structure is visible with a polished finish. It’s also easier to keep a polished stone with clean and free of stains because its seal closes the pores of the stone’s surface and repels moisture.

Not Suggested Areas

Polished finishes are not suggested for high traffic areas due to the high visibility of wear and tear. It is also not recommended for floors that are prone to get wet, such as the bathroom. Polished floors are extremely slippery when wet and can be hazardous.

Suggested Areas

Polished finishes are ideal for powder rooms, countertops, walls, and fireplaces.
